The air in the small café felt thick, not with the usual comforting aroma of roasted beans, but with a cloying tension that clung to every surface. Rain lashed against the windowpanes, blurring the already grey cityscape into a watercolor wash. I traced the condensation on my glass of iced water, the chill seeping into my fingertips, a small comfort against the heat that had begun to bloom in my chest. Rhys’s words, spoken in the hushed desperation of the alleyway, replayed in my mind, each one a tiny spark igniting a wildfire of doubt and fear. “They know you’re looking, Elara. They know you’re close.”

My gaze drifted to the entrance, a nervous habit I’d developed over the past few days. Every approaching car, every unfamiliar face, sent a jolt of adrenaline through me. Anya had been insistent that I lay low, that I let her handle things, but how could I? Rhys had trusted me with a truth so profound, so terrifying, that it had shattered the foundations of my existence. And now, he was gone, swallowed by the same shadows that seemed to be closing in on me.

A sudden movement at the counter drew my attention. A man, his face obscured by the brim of a dark fedora, was speaking to the barista, his voice a low rumble that was lost to the din of the café. He paid, then turned, his eyes, sharp and assessing, sweeping across the room. They landed on me. And then, with a deliberate slowness that made my heart hammer against my ribs, he began to walk towards my table.
