The air in Anya’s apartment always smelled faintly of lavender and old paper, a scent that had once been a comfort, a tangible anchor to the life I knew. Now, it felt like a gilded cage, a fragile illusion I was desperately trying to shatter. Anya, bless her oblivious heart, was bustling in the kitchen, the rhythmic clinking of mugs a stark contrast to the frantic drumming in my own chest. She was recounting a story about a particularly disastrous blind date, her voice a cheerful stream of complaints and observations. I nodded, trying to focus, but my gaze kept drifting to the worn photo album on the coffee table. It was filled with sun-drenched memories of childhood, of family vacations, of a girl who looked like me but felt like a stranger.

“And then he actually had the nerve to say my laugh was ‘a bit much’,” Anya huffed, finally joining me on the sofa, a steaming mug of chamomile in her hands. She nudged the album with her foot. “Still poring over these old relics, Elara? You know, you’re starting to look like one yourself.”

I forced a smile. “Just… reminiscing.” The word tasted like ash. My mind wasn’t on the happy faces captured in faded Kodachrome. It was on the one loose thread, the one anomaly that had been gnawing at me since Rhys had first appeared, since the cryptic message had landed on my doorstep. Anya, in her unwavering loyalty, had been my sounding board, my voice of reason, but how could she reason with a truth that was rewriting my very existence?
