The sterile white of the interrogation room had been replaced by the frantic, pulsing red and blue of flashing lights outside, painting Elara’s small apartment in a disorienting, nightmarish glow. The air, once thick with the scent of old paper and the faint perfume of Rhys’s jacket, now crackled with the metallic tang of fear. Rhys was a blur of controlled motion, his usual calm replaced by a sharp, urgent energy. He moved with a speed that belied his measured demeanor, his hands already gathering essentials.

“What’s happening?” Elara’s voice was a strained whisper, her heart thudding a frantic rhythm against her ribs. The cryptic message, the hushed conversations with Rhys, the unsettling feeling of being watched – it had all culminated in this. The comforting normalcy of her life had shattered, replaced by a stark, terrifying reality.

Rhys didn’t look at her, his gaze fixed on the window, scanning the street below with an unnerving intensity. “They know we know. Or, at least, they suspect. We have to move. Now.”
