Elara decides to trust Rhys, despite her lingering doubts. They meet in a clandestine location, preparing to unearth the full story of her past and his role in it.
The storm raged outside, a furious symphony of wind and rain battering against the old warehouse walls. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of damp concrete and something else, something metallic and sharp that Elara couldn't quite place. It was a smell that clung to the edges of her memory, a phantom limb of a forgotten trauma. She clutched the worn leather satchel at her side, its contents – photocopies of faded newspaper clippings, a dog-eared journal, and Rhys’s cryptic USB drive – a heavy weight against her thigh.
Rhys stood by a grimy window, his silhouette stark against the flickering neon sign of a distant, forgotten diner. The rain slicked his dark hair, and a single drop traced a path down his jawline, disappearing into the collar of his jacket. He turned, his eyes, those impossibly deep pools of midnight, met hers. There was no charming smile this time, no easy banter. Just a quiet intensity that both unnerved and captivated her.
“Are you sure about this, Elara?” His voice was a low rumble, barely audible over the tempest.
