But it was a father’s instinct, a primal vigilance, that now sharpened his senses to a razor’s edge. The air around Dr. Okoro, once so reassuringly clean and professional, had begun to carry a faint, acrid scent of unease. It was a scent he couldn't quite place, a discordant note in the symphony of his community, yet it hummed persistently in the back of his mind.

He saw it in the way Nkeiru, his bright, vivacious daughter, had retreated into herself. The laughter that used to bubble up so effortlessly now seemed forced, a fragile shield against an unseen pain. Her eyes, once so full of spark, held a distant, haunted quality, as if she were perpetually looking at something far beyond the present moment. He’d tried to draw her out, offering gentle questions, a comforting presence, but she’d remained guarded, her words clipped and evasive when he dared to probe too deeply into her recent visits to the esteemed Dr. Okoro.

“Just a check-up, Papa,” she’d murmur, her gaze fixed on some invisible point on the wall. “Everything is fine.”
