The fluorescent lights of the laundromat hummed a discordant tune, a stark contrast to the soft glow of the streetlamps outside. It was late, the kind of late where the world felt hushed and ordinary, making the sudden intrusion of fear all the more jarring. Ken fumbled with the quarters, the metallic clink echoing in the cavernous space. He’d chosen this hour to avoid the usual after-school crowd, the lingering scent of detergent and fabric softener a comforting, if mundane, aroma. He just wanted to get his clothes washed and head home, the image of Kail’s smile still playing on his lips from their brief, stolen moments together.

They spoke in low, guttural tones, words Ken couldn’t quite catch, but the intent was as clear as the harsh overhead lights.

Panic, cold and sharp, began to prickle at him. He tried to appear casual, continuing to fold his laundry, his hands suddenly clumsy. He risked a glance. They were heading towards him. Their eyes, dark and empty, were fixed on him. There was no recognition, no curiosity, just a chilling, detached hunger.
