The dust of the road, a constant companion for days, finally began to settle. It wasn’t the fine, suffocating dust of the courtyard where I’d spent my mornings sweeping, but a more vibrant, living kind, kicked up by the thrum of a thousand feet. I’d heard the distant murmur for an hour now, a low hum that grew steadily, promising something beyond the endless fields and the silent, watchful trees. And then, it appeared.
The town. It wasn't a grand city, not by any means, but compared to the hushed stillness of my grandmother's cottage, it was a riot of sound and color. Buildings, crammed together like old friends, lined a wide street that pulsed with life. Merchants called out their wares, their voices a cheerful cacophony. The scent of baking bread mingled with something sharp and spicy, and the distant clang of a blacksmith’s hammer was a rhythmic counterpoint to the general hubbub. My heart, which had been a dull, heavy stone for so long, began to beat a quicker, lighter rhythm of its own. This was it. A new horizon.
I clutched the small, worn satchel tighter, the rough wool a familiar comfort against my palm. Inside, nestled amongst a few carefully folded clothes and the precious, ink-stained journal, was the meager sum I’d managed to save. It wasn’t much, barely enough to keep me fed for a week, but it represented escape. It represented freedom. The freedom my grandmother, in her own quiet way, had hinted at in those faded pages.
