Chapter 5
Chapter 5
After moving to the city, Anya struggles to adjust. While unpacking, she finds a hidden photograph of a young woman she does not recognize. Her mother reveals a family secret: the woman was her aunt, who died in the valley years ago. The swan's first appearance followed that tragedy, and its resilience came to symbolize the family's endurance. Anya understands her mother's connection to the place and the unspoken grief they carry.
The city was a different kind of winter. Instead of ice and snow, there was concrete and glass, and the cold came from shadows cast by buildings that never warmed in the sun. Our new apartment sat on the third floor of a grey block, windows looking out onto a street where cars hissed past at all hours. The noise was constant—a low hum that seeped into the walls and into my sleep. I missed the sound of the river, the wind through the reeds, the quiet that had wrapped around the valley like a blanket.
My parents tried to make the transition smooth. My mother hung familiar curtains in the kitchen. My father set up his desk in the corner of the living room, the same way it had been in the house. But the rooms were smaller, the ceilings lower, and the light that came through the windows was grey and flat. I felt like a plant that had been uprooted and placed in poor soil, wilting in slow motion.
School was worse. The children here already knew each other. They had their own jokes, their own circles, their own ways of speaking that I did not understand. At lunch, I sat alone with my sandwich, staring at the mural of a mountain on the cafeteria wall. It was supposed to be beautiful, but it looked fake, like a postcard. I remembered the real mountains in the distance of the valley, the way they changed color with the seasons. I did not belong here.
