The air in Master Chronos’s study hummed with a quiet energy, a stark contrast to the tempestuous winds that had howled through the Fifth Gate just hours before. My hands still tingled with the residual warmth of the Gate’s power, a sensation that was both exhilarating and terrifying. We had done it. We had faced the Fury, a maelstrom of uncontrolled time, and emerged victorious. But victory felt like a fragile thing, a butterfly caught in a hurricane, and Silas was that hurricane.
Master Chronos sat across from me, his ancient eyes, usually twinkling with a gentle amusement, were now clouded with a deep, thoughtful weariness. He traced patterns on the polished wooden table with a gnarled finger, each movement slow and deliberate. “Five gates secured, Elara,” he murmured, his voice a low rumble. “A remarkable feat for one so young, and for one who has only just begun to understand the currents you navigate.”
I hugged my knees to my chest, the rough fabric of my tunic scratching against my skin. “But there are four more, aren’t there? And Silas… he’s still out there. He’s still trying to break them all.” The thought of Silas sent a shiver down my spine. His presence was a chilling void, a place where laughter died and shadows stretched too long. I remembered the icy tendrils of his power reaching for the Fifth Gate, hungry and malevolent.
