The dream returned, as it often did, a swirling kaleidoscope of places I’d never been and sounds I couldn’t quite place. Mountains crumbled into dust, rivers flowed backward, and a chorus of whispers, like a thousand leaves rustling in a forgotten wind, filled the air. I always woke up with my heart thumping a frantic rhythm against my ribs, the lingering scent of something like ozone and old paper clinging to my room. Mama always said it was just my imagination running wild, a common affliction for a girl who spent too much time with her nose in books. But I knew, deep down, it was more. The world around me felt… thin. Like a veil stretched too taut, threatening to tear.

It had started with small things. My favorite blue marble, the one with the swirls like a tiny galaxy, would vanish from my bedside table only to reappear later in the cereal box. Sometimes, when I was playing in the garden, a butterfly would flutter past, then another, and then the exact same butterfly would flutter past again, a perfect, impossible repeat. Anya, my aunt, would just smile and shake her head. “You’re seeing things, little sprout,” she’d say, her voice as warm and comforting as a freshly baked loaf of bread. “The sun plays tricks on our eyes sometimes.” But the sun didn’t make the ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall stutter, or the way the steam from my mug of hot chocolate would sometimes freeze in mid-air for a breath before continuing its upward journey.

Master Chronos, with his eyes like ancient pools and his voice like the rustle of dry leaves, had explained it all. The Nine Gates. The fragile weave of time. And me, Elara, a child who could feel the tremors when the weave was disturbed. He’d shown me the first gate, a shimmering archway hidden behind a waterfall that only I could see. He’d taught me to draw a sliver of its power, a warmth that spread through my fingertips, a faint hum that resonated in my bones. It was a terrifying responsibility, but also exhilarating.
