Chapter 1

Mia and Lily discover a glowing map in an attic and follow it into the Enchanted Forest, where they encounter a whispering voice and a talking fox named Ember.

“Look at this!” Mia’s voice rang out from the dusty shadows of the attic, her fingers brushing against splintered wood. She tugged at a blanket caked with decades of grime, revealing a box no larger than a bread loaf. Its surface was dark, almost black, and etched with symbols that seemed to shift when she blinked.

Lily climbed over a stack of yellowed books, her sharp eyes narrowing. “That wasn’t there before.” She knelt beside Mia, her breath quickening. “Your grandmother never mentioned it?”

“She never comes up here.” Mia pried at the lid. It resisted, then gave way with a groan that echoed through the rafters. Inside, folded with precise corners, lay a map. Its paper was thick, not quite parchment, and its edges shimmered with a faint gold that caught the light from the single grimy window. At the top, letters that seemed to crawl and settle spelled out: The Enchanted Forest — Where Magic Never Sleeps.

“A treasure map,” Mia whispered, her eyes wide. She traced a line that wound through a cluster of trees drawn in faded ink. “We have to follow it.”

Lily took the map, her fingers hovering over the surface. “But why would someone hide it here? In your grandmother’s attic?” She turned it over. The back was blank, but as she angled it, a faint shimmer rippled across the paper. Then, a tiny golden arrow appeared, no longer than her thumbnail, pointing toward the window. Toward the dark forest beyond the village.

Mia was already on her feet. “Let’s go see what’s over there!”

They packed quickly: sandwiches wrapped in cloth, a bottle of water, a flashlight that flickered when shaken, and a notebook with a chewed cover. Lily paused at the attic door, looking back at the empty box. Something felt wrong — not dangerous, but deliberate, as if they had been expected.

“We’ll be back before sunset,” Mia promised, though her voice carried no doubt.

The forest loomed at the edge of the village, a wall of twisted trunks and shadows that swallowed the afternoon light. As they crossed the boundary, the air changed. It grew cooler, thicker, and carried a scent like damp earth mixed with something sweet, almost floral. The trees were not ordinary. Their leaves glinted silver, catching light that had no source. Flowers bloomed in the underbrush, glowing faintly — soft blues and purples that pulsed like slow heartbeats. Tiny blue butterflies drifted past, their wings leaving trails of sparkling dust.

Lily stopped walking. “This place is beautiful.”

A voice answered, not from the air but from inside their heads. Mia... Lily...

The girls froze. Mia’s hand went to the flashlight, though she didn’t turn it on. Lily clutched the map, her knuckles white.

“Did you hear that?” Mia asked, her voice barely a whisper.

“Yes.” Lily’s eyes darted between the trees. “But how does this forest know our names?”

The voice came again, softer, like a breeze through dry leaves. Follow.

Mia stepped forward, driven by a pull she couldn’t name. Lily followed, her gaze fixed on the map, where the golden arrow now pointed deeper into the woods. They walked for what felt like both minutes and hours. The silver leaves rustled without wind. The glowing flowers seemed to watch them pass. The butterflies gathered in a loose cloud ahead, lighting the way.

They reached a river. Its water ran clear, but the stones beneath it shimmered with veins of pale blue. On the far bank stood a tree unlike any other — its trunk was as wide as a cottage, its bark covered in symbols that matched those on the box. A doorway had been carved into the wood, dark and inviting. Beside it, sitting on a mossy root, was a fox.

Its fur was the color of autumn leaves, and its eyes were purple — bright, luminous, holding a depth that made Lily’s breath catch. The fox tilted its head, studying them. Then it spoke, its voice carrying the same resonance as the whispering voice. “At last! The two chosen explorers have arrived.”

Mia took a step back, her heart pounding. “You can talk?”

“I can do many things,” the fox replied. It stood, stretching its slender body. “I am Ember, guardian of this forest’s heart. You have come because the map called you. But you do not yet understand what you have found.”

Lily held up the map. “It glowed. It pointed us here.”

“The map is a key,” Ember said. “But the lock is failing. The magic of the Enchanted Forest is fading. If it dies, so will everything that lives here — the silver leaves, the glowing flowers, the very light that keeps the darkness at bay.”

Mia’s curiosity flared into determination. “What can we do?”

Ember’s purple eyes met hers. “You must find the crystal that lies at the forest’s heart. But it is guarded. And the guardian does not welcome visitors.”

Before Mia could ask another question, a low growl rumbled from the shadows beyond the tree. The ground trembled. The silver leaves rattled. A shape emerged — massive, covered in dark leaves and twisted branches, with eyes that glowed like embers. It spoke, its voice like grinding stone. “Leave this place!”

Ember stepped in front of the girls, his fur bristling. “Thorn, wait. They are the chosen ones.”

“I do not care who they are!” The creature advanced, and the air grew thick with the smell of rotting wood. “The crystal is mine. No one touches it. No one.”

Mia grabbed Lily’s arm. The map slipped from Lily’s fingers, fluttering to the ground. The golden arrow flickered, then pointed directly at the creature — Thorn.

Thorn’s massive hand reached for them, leaves curling like claws.
