Chapter 8: The Shadow in the Glass
Anya and Kael enjoy a brief idyll in their new cottage, but Anya's bond with the land reveals a creeping corruption in the forest's edge. A vision from the Sunstone shows Valerius, alive and bound to a greater darkness, warning that the Sorcerer-King's master has awakened. Anya and Kael set out to investigate the source of the blight, leaving the cottage behind.
The first morning in the cottage was soft and golden. Sunlight spilled through the windows, catching dust motes that danced like tiny stars. Anya woke to the smell of woodsmoke and something cooking—Kael, it turned out, could make even simple porridge smell like a feast.
She found him at the hearth, stirring a pot with one hand and flipping through a worn book with the other. His hair was still mussed from sleep, and he wore a shirt that had clearly seen better days.
"You're staring," he said without looking up.
