Chapter 5: The Weight of Dawn
Anya and Kael find shelter in a cave, where she grapples with the hollow aftermath of the ritual and discovers a new, fragile magic within herself. Valerius's defeat leaves a power vacuum, and a mysterious envoy from the kingdom arrives with a warning that the sorcerer's master is coming. Anya resolves to face this new threat, and Kael pledges to stay by her side.
The cave mouth yawned before them like a wound in the hillside, its darkness a welcome relief from the silver glow of the forest. Anya stumbled as Kael guided her inside, her legs trembling with a weakness that felt deeper than bone. The Sunstone in her pocket was cold now, inert, a dead thing that had taken something vital from her in exchange for its power.
Kael lowered her to the ground with a gentleness that surprised her. His hands lingered on her shoulders as he eased her back against the stone wall, and she saw the worry etched into the lines around his eyes.
"Stay awake," he said, his voice low and urgent. "Just a little longer. I'll start a fire."
