Chapter 4: The Forest's Price
Anya and Kael flee Valerius's tower with the Sunstone, but the sorcerer pursues them through the Whisperwood. Anya uses the stone's power to break the barrier around the forest, only to discover that using the stone drains her life force. Kael reveals he was once Valerius's apprentice and knows a way to break the curse without the stone's full power, but it requires a sacrifice from both of them. They decide to face the consequences together, setting up a confrontation with Valerius in the heart of the forest.
The Whisperwood swallowed them the moment they stepped past the tower's shadow. Anya clutched the Sunstone to her chest, its golden light pulsing in time with her heartbeat, illuminating the twisted roots and glowing mushrooms that lined the forest floor. Kael moved beside her, his hand resting on the hilt of his dagger, his eyes scanning the darkness for any sign of pursuit.
"He'll come after us," Kael said, his voice low and urgent. "The Sunstone is everything to him."
"Then we need to move faster." Anya's legs burned from the climb down the tower, but she pushed herself harder. The stone hummed against her skin, and she could feel its power threading through her veins, warm and electric. It was intoxicating, terrifying, and she didn't trust it for a second.
