Chapter 1: The Mango Tree Decision

Emma, a bright and curious girl, finds herself torn between staying in the busy town with her mother or spending the school holiday in her grandmother's village. She longs for adventure and worries about what she might miss, leading to a heartfelt conversation that sets her journey in motion.

Emma squeezed her mango tighter, the sweet yellow juice running down her wrist. In the middle of the school playground, surrounded by noisy friends, she sat beneath their favorite mango tree. The town’s tall buildings peeked over the school fence. Emma’s laughter danced in the air, but inside, a big question pressed against her heart.

Today, Mama had said, “Emma, after school closes, you can stay here with me, or you can visit Gogo in the village. What would you like?”

Emma loved her mother’s gentle hugs, the bright town lights, and the games she played with her friend Mira. She loved walking past the bakery where the smell of warm bread floated out, and the honking of minibuses always made her giggle. But she also remembered the stories Mama told about the village—rivers to splash in, chickens to chase, and stars that hung low like lanterns in the dark sky.

“Are you sad?” Mira asked, popping her mango seed into her mouth.

Emma shrugged. “I don’t know. I want to stay and go swimming at the town pool. But I also want to see Gogo’s goats and climb the big baobab tree.”

Mira grinned. “Maybe you can do both!”

But Emma shook her head. “It’s one or the other. I wish I could split myself in two.”

After school, Emma walked home slowly. Her shoes kicked pebbles down the dusty path, and her mind whirled with thoughts. When she opened the front gate, Mama was sweeping the porch, her headscarf bright as sunshine.

“Emma, you’re quiet today,” Mama said.

Emma climbed the steps and dropped her bag. “Mama, what if the village is too different? What if I miss you and my friends? What if I get bored?”

Mama smiled and set the broom aside. She knelt, so their faces were close. “Remember, Emma, new places can be strange, but your heart can hold two worlds. You just need to be brave enough to say yes.”

Emma thought about the soft grass at Gogo’s house, the smell of smoke from the outdoor kitchen, and the laughter of cousins she barely knew. She thought about the busy streets, Mira’s jokes, and the ice cream truck’s jingle.

Her heart fluttered like a butterfly caught between two bright flowers.

That evening, as the sunset painted orange stripes across the sky, Emma climbed the mango tree outside her window. She could see the sparkling lights of the town on one side, and beyond the hills, she imagined the calm green of the village.

“Maybe I’ll find out what’s waiting for me,” Emma whispered, hugging the branch tightly. “Maybe the adventure is in choosing.”

Above her, a mango dropped with a soft thud, as if agreeing.

Inside the house, Mama called, “Emma, supper’s ready! Come share your thoughts!”

Emma slid down the tree, dusted her hands, and smiled to herself. She didn’t have to choose everything right now. But she did have to make one brave choice. Tomorrow, she would tell Mama her answer.

And out in the deepening night, a soft wind carried the scent of bread and woodsmoke, blending the two worlds Emma so dearly wanted to know.
