The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to Emma like a second skin, a stark contrast to the usual city grit and ink that marked her presence. She clutched Penny’s small hand, the warmth of the child a surprising anchor in the churning sea of her own fear. Three days. Three agonizing days since the world had tilted on its axis, since Trevor had vanished in a blur of panicked adrenaline and the chilling echo of sirens. Three days since Emma had found herself the reluctant guardian of a seven-year-old with eyes too old for her years and a silence that spoke volumes.

To Emma’s astonishment, Penny had reached out a hesitant hand, stroking his sleek black fur. A faint smile had bloomed on her lips, the first Emma had seen. The two had become an unlikely pair, Penny’s quiet whispers to the cat filling the apartment with a gentle cadence that began to chip away at Emma’s hardened exterior.
