The air in the abandoned convenience store hung thick with the scent of dust and decay, a grim counterpoint to the vibrant, life-saving miracle that had become a global obsession. Emma huddled deeper into the shadowed corner, the worn fabric of her black band t-shirt a familiar comfort against the chill that seeped from the concrete floor. Across the narrow aisle, Trevor, his usual swagger replaced by a weary slump, fiddled with the dial on a crackling portable radio. The tinny voice of a news anchor, smooth and reassuring, spoke of the unprecedented success of the Vera Tek vaccine, the eradication of diseases, the dawning of a new era. Emma’s stomach twisted.
