Elara held the artifact, its smooth obsidian surface cool beneath her trembling fingers. The Whispering Falls had lived up to their name, their cascading waters a constant murmur against the ancient stones, but the true whispers, the ones she had chased across leagues and through shadows, remained elusive. Yet, as she stood there, the artifact pulsed with a gentle warmth, a resonance that seemed to speak not of the past, but of the present, of her own beating heart.

Across from her, the figure who had stalked her every step, the shadowy presence that had been the harbinger of fear, now stood subdued. The cloak that had concealed their form was pulled back, revealing not a monster, but a person. Their face, etched with a sorrow that mirrored Elara’s own, was finally visible in the soft, ethereal light filtering from unseen sources within the cavern. There were no sharp angles, no monstrous features, only the weary lines of a life lived in hardship.

“They are not here,” the figure said, their voice a low rumble, surprisingly devoid of the menace Elara had come to associate with them. It was a voice that had known pain, a voice that had carried burdens for a long time. “Your parents… their essence is woven into the fabric of this place, but they cannot be summoned as you hoped.”
