The Whispering Walls

The air in the room was thick, a stagnant soup of stale smoke and something vaguely metallic, like old blood. Each breath felt like swallowing dust. I leaned against the rough brick wall, the grit pressing into my thin shirt, trying to make myself smaller, less visible. But visibility was the last thing I wanted. I wanted to disappear, to melt into the shadows that clung to the corners of this godforsaken place. My ears, however, were straining, trying to pull substance from the muffled sounds that filtered through the thin door.

They were whispers, mostly. Indistinct murmurs that rose and fell like a tide, punctuated by the occasional sharp laugh or a choked sob. The girls. The ones Stephon called his “inventory.” I’d been standing guard outside this door for what felt like an eternity, the cheap, flickering bulb above me casting long, dancing shadows that played tricks on my eyes. Each time the door creaked open, a sliver of light would spill out, revealing a fleeting glimpse of a girl’s face, pale and vacant, or a man’s leering grin. And each time it slammed shut, plunging me back into the oppressive gloom, a fresh wave of nausea would wash over me.

William’s face swam before my eyes. His desperate plea, the agonizing decision, the sharp, sickening crack of the gunshot. It replayed in my mind with horrifying clarity, a loop of betrayal and death that threatened to shatter what little remained of my sanity. Stephon’s words echoed too, a cold, pragmatic explanation that chilled me to the bone. “He ratted you out to save his own hide. I can’t have that.” And then, the chilling finality: “Not yet, my friend. You’re going to work.”
