The air in the narrow hallway was thick with a cloying sweetness, a perfume that couldn't quite mask the underlying stench of stale sweat and desperation. I stood outside the door, my hands shoved deep into the pockets of trousers that felt alien, rough against my skin. This wasn't a uniform, not really, but it was the closest thing I had. He smelled of expensive cologne and something else, something metallic and sharp that I couldn't quite place. It was the smell of control, I supposed, the scent of a man who held all the strings.
