The door was a slab of scarred, dark wood, an ancient sentinel guarding a nightmarish realm. It felt heavy, impossibly so, under my trembling hand. Stephon’s words, a chillingly casual pronouncement, still echoed in the hollow chambers of my skull: “Not yet, my friend. You’re going to work.” And now, here I was, positioned before this grim portal, tasked with a role that curdled my very soul. My job. To wait. To guard. To be the first line of defense for a horror I could only begin to comprehend.

I could still feel the phantom weight of William’s accusation, the raw terror that had contorted his face as he’d pointed a shaking finger at me. “Eli’s fault! He’s the one who got us into this!” The memory was a fresh wound, a constant throb beneath the surface of my forced composure. He’d saved himself, had William, and in doing so, had condemned me to this. And Stephon, with his unnerving calm, had simply nodded, a predator assessing its next meal.
