Chapter 6
Echoes of a Former Life
Eli's mind flashes back to his privileged past, a stark contrast to the present squalor. How did he get here? The memory of his family and the life he lost fuels a flicker of defiance.
The air in the room was thick with a cloying sweetness, the kind that clung to your tongue and promised rot beneath. I’d always hated that smell, even when it was just cheap perfume masking something less pleasant at a party I’d rather not have been at. Now, it felt like a shroud. His eyes, small and dark, seemed to bore right through me. “So,” he began, his voice dropping to a dangerous register, “what to do, what to do.” He paced, the sound of his footsteps echoing hollowly. “See, my problem is, you boys owe me money.” He stopped, turning to face us fully. “A lot of money.”
William, ever the quick thinker, or perhaps just the quickest to panic, blurted out, “My father will pay you! I promise! Just let us go, please!”
