The heavy, damp air clung to me like a shroud, a suffocating reminder of the days bleeding into weeks, then months, since I’d last seen the sun. My eyes, accustomed to the perpetual twilight of this place, barely registered the faint, flickering bulb overhead. It cast long, skeletal shadows that danced with every tremor that ran through my body. Each night, I stood at this door, the wood rough beneath my clammy palms, listening to the muffled sounds from within – the hushed whispers, the choked sobs, the hollow laughter that was more a plea than joy. My job was simple, brutal, and soul-crushing: I was the gatekeeper to hell.

I was a ghost in my own life, a husk of the person I once was. The tailored suits and the easy confidence of my past felt like a dream belonging to someone else. Now, my clothes were perpetually stained, smelling of stale smoke and something far more unpleasant. Yet, when I spoke, even in my hushed, fearful tones, the remnants of that privileged upbringing always surfaced, a jarring contrast to the grime that coated my skin. It was a dissonance that both protected and condemned me.

The memory of William’s betrayal still clawed at my throat, a bitter bile that I swallowed down every waking moment. Stephon’s words, delivered with that chillingly calm pragmatism, replayed endlessly: "William's ratting you out to save his own hide. I can't have that." And then, the sharp crack of the gun, a sound that had ripped through the thin walls and embedded itself deep within my psyche. William, my friend, gone in a puff of smoke and desperation. And I was left.
