The air in the room was thick, a cloying mix of stale smoke, cheap perfume, and something else, something metallic and unsettling that clung to the back of my throat. I stood by the door, my back pressed against the peeling wallpaper, every nerve in my body screaming a silent alarm. My hands, usually steady, trembled as I adjusted the collar of the ill-fitting jacket Stephon had thrown at me. It smelled of mothballs and desperation. My own clothes, the ones I’d arrived in, were long gone, replaced by this cheap ensemble that felt like a costume for a role I never auditioned for.
The door I guarded was solid, unmarked, and radiated a chilling silence from within. I knew what lay behind it. I knew the hushed giggles, the forced smiles, the hollowed-out eyes that belonged to the girls Stephon kept back there. Each one a ghost, waiting to be summoned, to be consumed by men with pockets lined with ill-gotten wealth and hearts as empty as their promises. My job was simple, brutal: to be the gatekeeper, the silent sentry for their degradation.
It felt like a lifetime ago, though it had only been a few weeks, that William and I had been pushed into that dimly lit room. Stephon, his voice a low rumble of menace, had been stroking the head of a young girl, her eyes glazed, her body limp. "You just need a little more time, and you'll do just fine," he'd murmured, his words laced with a chilling possessiveness. Then, his pants half-unzipped, a flash of something indecent, he’d turned to us. "Bring them this way," he’d commanded the two hulking brutes who’d shoved us into this nightmare.
