Chapter 17
Forging an Unlikely Alliance
Eli cautiously approaches another captive, someone who seems to share his desire for freedom. Trust is a rare commodity, but a shared enemy might be enough to forge a bond.
The chill of the brick seeped through the thin soles of my shoes, a constant, unwelcome reminder of where I was. It wasn’t just the cold, though. It was the smell, a cloying mix of stale sweat, cheap disinfectant, and something else… something metallic and sickly sweet that I tried desperately to ignore. I stood sentinel by the door, my knuckles white where I gripped the rough wood. Each creak of the hinges, each muffled sound from within, sent a fresh wave of nausea through me. Behind this door, girls waited. Girls who were no longer girls, really. Their youth was a currency, their innocence a commodity to be stripped away by men who paid Stephon. My own eyes, I realized, must reflect a similar emptiness. The tailored clothes I’d once worn felt like a costume from another lifetime, a life of mahogany desks and hushed boardrooms, a life so far removed from this grimy reality it might as well have belonged to someone else. That was the ghost of the boy who’d never had to worry about where his next meal came from, let alone the price of his own life.
Stephon’s words still echoed in the hollows of my mind: *“if neither of you would have said anything i would have had you bother working for but he ratted you you out to save his own hide i cant have that.”* William. My friend. The one who’d pointed the finger, sealing his own fate and condemning me to this. The memory of the gunshots, sharp and final, still made my stomach clench. And then, Stephon’s voice, calm as ever, “Not yet, my friend, you’re going to work.”
