The stale air in the cramped hallway clung to me like a shroud, thick with the cloying scent of cheap perfume and something else… something metallic and sickly sweet that I was beginning to associate with despair. My new reality was this dingy corridor, the chipped paint on the walls a testament to countless years of neglect, and the perpetually dim bulb overhead casting long, distorted shadows that danced with my every breath. My job, as Stephon had so casually explained, was to stand here, a sentinel at a forbidden gate. Behind this door, behind the warped wood and the flimsy lock, were girls. Girls who were waiting. Waiting to be chosen, waiting to be consumed by the men with the money, the men Stephon served.

I’d been here for three days. Three days of forced stillness, of listening to the muffled sounds from within the room – stifled sobs, the occasional burst of forced laughter, the low murmur of voices that always seemed to end in a desperate plea. Each sound was a fresh stab, a reminder of my own complicity, however unwilling.
