The air in the hallway was thick, not just with the stale scent of cheap disinfectant and something vaguely floral, but with a palpable tension that clung to everything like a second skin. I stood by the door, my assigned post, my assigned purgatory. My fingers, raw from scrubbing what felt like phantom stains off the floor earlier, traced the cool, rough grain of the wood. Each minute stretched into an eternity, punctuated by the muffled sounds from within the room I guarded. Laughter, sometimes a sob, the clink of glasses, the murmur of voices – a symphony of despair played out behind a curtain of forced joviality.

Stephon was a creature of habit, a predictable predator. I’d already spent days observing him, cataloging his movements with a desperate intensity that bordered on obsession. It was the only weapon I had left, this ability to see, to remember. He’d emerge from his private chambers, usually around mid-morning, a ghost of a smile playing on his lips, his eyes scanning the hallways as if searching for something he’d lost, or perhaps, something he intended to find. He’d drift through the main living area, a place that reeked of a gaudy, desperate attempt at luxury, before making his way to the rooms where his… *investments* were kept.

Today was no different. The faint scent of his expensive cologne, a sharp contrast to the general grime of the place, preceded him. He moved with a languid grace that belied the coiled danger beneath the surface. He paused at the entrance to the room I guarded, his gaze sweeping over the girls inside, a proprietary glint in his eyes. He didn’t speak, just a nod, a barely perceptible tilt of his head, and then he was gone, disappearing down the corridor towards the offices.
