Chapter 14
The Trafficker's Network
Eli begins to understand the scope of Stephon's operation, the connections to powerful people. The realization of how deep this rot goes is terrifying and paralyzing.
The air in the room was thick with the stale scent of fear and something metallic, something that clung to the back of my throat. Stephon’s words, so casual, so utterly devoid of remorse, still echoed in the cramped space. “Not yet, my friend. You’re going to work.” Work. The word felt alien, a hollow mockery of the life I’d once known. My life. The one that had dissolved like sugar in hot coffee the moment William’s betrayal solidified into the chilling crack of a gunshot.
Tears I hadn’t realized were falling tracked clean paths through the grime on my cheeks. My body trembled, a violent, uncontrollable shudder that rippled through my lean frame. I was a puppet whose strings had been brutally severed, only to be reattached by a far crueler hand. Stephon, this… this monster, had just orchestrated the death of my supposed friend, and now I was his. My privileged upbringing, the soft edges of my former existence, felt like a cruel joke, a phantom limb that throbbed with phantom pain. All of it was gone, replaced by this suffocating darkness and the stench of despair.
Stephon, his face impassive, watched me with an unnerving stillness. He wasn’t a man of grand pronouncements or theatrical rage. His power lay in his chilling pragmatism, his absolute lack of empathy. He’d simply assessed the situation, weighed the options, and made the most efficient choice. William was a loose end, a liability he’d neatly tied off. I, on the other hand, was an asset. A broken one, perhaps, but an asset nonetheless.
