The air in the hallway was thick, clinging to my skin like a shroud. It smelled of stale cigarettes, cheap disinfectant, and something else, something metallic and sharp that I couldn't quite place. My hands, raw and blistered from the meager work Stephon had assigned me – cleaning endlessly, scrubbing at stains that seemed to seep from the very walls – were clammy. I leaned against the peeling paint of the door, the rough texture a stark contrast to the smooth mahogany of my father’s desk. Just thinking about it sent a fresh wave of nausea through me.

The muffled sounds from behind the door were a constant, gnawing reminder of where I was, of what I was forced to guard. Laughter, sometimes, a sharp, brittle sound. Other times, a low murmur, a plea, a sob. Each noise was a tiny shard of glass lodging itself deeper into my conscience. I tried to block them out, to focus on the slow, agonizing crawl of the seconds, but they were an inescapable soundtrack to my new reality.

Then I heard it. Footsteps. Not the heavy, purposeful tread of Stephon's men, nor the hesitant shuffle of the girls. These were different. Measured. Confident. They approached the door, and a cold dread, unlike anything I’d felt before, snaked up my spine. I straightened, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird.
