The heavy, damp air clung to me like a shroud, each breath a gritty reminder of where I was. The sickly yellow light, a weak pulse in the oppressive darkness, did little to dispel the gloom. It merely illuminated the peeling paint, the stained concrete floor, and the faint, metallic tang that I was beginning to associate with fear. My hands, usually steady, trembled as I gripped the rough wood of the doorframe. This was my post. My new reality.

Just hours ago, I was… I don’t even know. Somewhere else. Somewhere with light, with air that didn’t taste of despair. Now, I stood guard. The muffled sounds from behind the door were a constant, sickening percussion. A girl’s whimper, a man’s low growl, a desperate, stifled sob. Each sound was a tiny shard of ice piercing my conscience. I was the gatekeeper to their misery, the silent sentinel to their exploitation.

Stephon’s words, delivered with that chillingly casual menace, replayed in my mind. “You work for me now, Eli. You wait here. You make sure no one comes in, and no one comes out, unless I say so.” He’d said it like he was assigning me a tedious chore, like I was a reluctant intern fetching coffee. But the dead, vacant look in the eyes of the girls I’d glimpsed as they were ushered in, the way they flinched at every touch, had told a different story. A story of stolen innocence, of broken spirits, of a darkness so profound I could barely comprehend it.
