The air in the dusty tavern was thick with the scent of stale ale and desperation, a potent cocktail that did little to soothe Marianne’s frayed nerves. They’d spent the better part of the day gathering what little information they could, whispers in shadowed corners and furtive glances exchanged between wary patrons. Each new piece of intel felt like another stone added to the precarious wall they were building against the encroaching darkness.

Erica, ever the composed anchor, nursed a mug of something dark and frothy, her gaze sweeping over the room with a practiced, almost weary, vigilance. “Another dead end, it seems,” she murmured, her voice a low rumble that barely disturbed the ambient din. “The trail of the juddicies grows cold, and Poison Ninja remains a phantom.”

Marianne traced the rim of her own untouched drink, a knot of unease tightening in her stomach. “But we *know* he’s out there. We saw what his forces did.” The memory of the burning village, the terrified screams, the chilling efficiency of the shadow-cloaked figures, still sent a shiver down her spine. Her own awakening, the searing inferno that had ripped through her veins, felt like both a miracle and a curse.
