The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick and still, a palpable silence that pressed in on Marianne’s eardrums. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the skeletal remains of forgotten machinery. This was their sanctuary, their temporary haven after the chaos of the city, a place where they could finally catch their breath. But the quiet felt… wrong. It was the kind of quiet that precedes a storm, a held breath before a scream.
Adrian, ever the picture of calm, was meticulously cleaning his canteen, his movements fluid and unhurried. Gordon, a coiled spring of restless energy, paced the perimeter, his gloved hands clenched into fists. Erica, her Steel magic a subtle hum of resilience around her, sat cross-legged, her eyes closed, seemingly meditating. Marianne, however, couldn't shake the unease prickling her skin. The Fire within her, usually a warm ember, felt agitated, flickering with an unseen anxiety.
"Are you sure this is the best place?" Marianne finally voiced the thought that had been gnawing at her. "It feels… empty."
