The air in the abandoned warehouse hung thick with the scent of decay and something metallic, like old blood. Dust motes danced in the slivers of moonlight that pierced the grimy windows, illuminating the tense tableau. Marianne, her knuckles white where she gripped the worn leather of her satchel, felt a tremor of unease that had nothing to do with the chill seeping from the cracked concrete floor. It was Scarecrow. The Shadow magic inheritor, a wraith in life and a phantom in their midst, had a way of twisting reality, of making truths feel like lies and doubts bloom like poisonous fungi.

“You claim to be here to help us,” Gordon’s voice, usually a low rumble, was sharp, laced with suspicion. He stood a few feet away from Marianne, his arms crossed, his frosty aura a palpable counterpoint to the lingering heat that always seemed to emanate from her. “But all we’ve seen are your master’s attacks. All we’ve heard are his empty promises.”

Scarecrow, a figure cloaked in shifting darkness, offered no visible reaction, but a subtle ripple in the shadows surrounding her seemed to convey amusement. “Master Poison Ninja has his own motivations,” she purred, her voice like silk drawn over barbed wire. “Motivations that, perhaps, align with your own more than you realize.”
