Chapter 10
The Hydrogen Divide
Erica's brother, Marcus, a Hydrogen magic user, appears. His allegiance is unclear, creating a rift and a potential future conflict for Erica.
The air in the hidden valley, usually a tapestry of rustling leaves and the distant murmur of the river, crackled with an unfamiliar tension. It was a tension born not of impending battle, but of a quiet, gnawing uncertainty that had settled over their makeshift camp. Marianne, perched on a moss-covered boulder, traced patterns in the dust with a twig, her fiery spirit momentarily subdued. The victory against the Judicary remnants had been hard-won, but it had brought with it a new, more personal kind of unease.
Adrian, ever the picture of calm, sat by the dying embers of their campfire, his gaze fixed on the dancing flames. Even his serene presence seemed to hold a subtle ripple of concern. Gordon, his arms crossed, leaned against a gnarled oak, his usual scowl deepened by a furrowed brow. Erica, her Steel element humming faintly around her like a protective aura, was meticulously cleaning her blade, her movements precise, almost mechanical, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within.
The silence was broken by the crunch of boots on gravel. It wasn't the stealthy tread of an enemy, but the measured, confident stride of someone who belonged, or at least, *thought* they belonged. Marianne’s head snapped up, her eyes, usually blazing with the ember of her power, now held a flicker of apprehension. Adrian’s hand instinctively moved towards his side, where his water-infused canteen lay. Gordon straightened, his posture shifting from casual observation to coiled readiness. Erica’s blade paused mid-swipe.
