The fluorescent lights of Sterling Corp. hummed with their usual, uninspiring drone, a sound Mary usually found as comforting as a weighted blanket. Today, however, it felt more like the buzz of a trapped fly, irritating and insistent. She was hunched over her desk, a mountain of spreadsheets blurring before her eyes. Usually, Mary was the sunshine in their quartet, the one who could find a silver lining in a storm cloud, her optimism a shield against the mundane. But lately, even her inner sunshine seemed to be dimming, overshadowed by a persistent fog of fatigue and a gnawing dissatisfaction.

It had started subtly, a quiet hum beneath the surface of her usual cheerful disposition. Lancy’s dramatic health scare, followed by her vibrant, almost startling transformation, had been a seismic shift for their group. Then Mario, with his newfound sleekness and confident swagger, had begun to turn heads, not just for his looks, but for his surprisingly sharp insights in meetings. Even Maya, usually content to observe with her characteristic dark humor, had started to ask more probing questions, her gaze more focused, less merely amused.
