The air grew heavy, not with the chill of approaching night, but with a profound, aching stillness. Elara, Kael, and Elder Maeve walked through a landscape that seemed to hold its breath. The trees, once vibrant with the rustle of their leaves, now stood like silent sentinels, their branches bare of even the memory of song. The colors, too, had leached away, leaving behind a world painted in muted grays and pale, washed-out blues. It was as if the very joy had been siphoned from the air, leaving only a hollow echo.

They had been following a faint, almost imperceptible pull, a thread of dissonance that tugged at Elara’s very soul. It led them deeper into the hushed lands, away from the familiar paths, towards a place whispered about in hushed tones by the oldest villagers: the River of Lost Songs.

“It’s… quiet,” Kael murmured, his voice barely disturbing the heavy air. He clutched the worn leather strap of his satchel, his eyes scanning the desolate surroundings with a mixture of unease and fierce protectiveness. Even his usual practical demeanor seemed to waver in the face of this pervasive silence.
