The sun, a shy guest in the perpetually twilight sky of Willow Creek, cast long, hesitant shadows across Elara’s small garden. Her fingers, usually nimble and sure, felt a tremor of something new as they hovered over the polished surface of her Resonator. It lay nestled in a bed of moss, its twelve pads, each a different hue, glowing with a faint, internal light. It was a familiar comfort, this instrument, a part of her as her own hands, yet today, it felt… more.

Elder Maeve had spoken of the ‘old songs,’ melodies that hummed beneath the surface of their world, the very threads that wove the tapestry of their lives. Elara had tried to capture them, to coax them out with the familiar tunes that made the river sparkle and the flowers bloom in vibrant bursts of color. She touched the sapphire pad, the one that usually sang of the cool, clear water of the creek. Instead of the familiar cascade of notes, a single, sustained tone bloomed, rich and melancholic. It wasn’t sad, not exactly, but it held a weight, a depth that made her breath catch. She pressed another pad, the emerald one that conjured the scent of pine needles. This time, a harmony emerged, a gentle counterpoint to the sapphire’s drone, like two lonely voices finding each other in the vastness of a forest.
