Chapter 17
Returning Harmony
As they descend, the world brightens. The silent forest sings again, the river flows with gentle melodies. Music returns, richer for its brief absence.
The descent from the Whispering Peaks was a journey bathed in a soft, returning light. With each step downwards, the world seemed to exhale a sigh of relief, and the air, once heavy with a stifled silence, began to hum with a nascent melody. Elara, her heart still thrumming with the profound peace she had coaxed from the Discord, felt the change deep within her bones. Beside her, Kael walked with a lighter tread, his eyes wide as he took in the subtle yet undeniable shift in their surroundings.
The Silent Forest, which had seemed so muted and sorrowful on their ascent, was now awakening. Tiny, vibrant birds, their plumage dulled by the Discord’s touch, flitted through the branches, their chirps weaving a delicate tapestry of sound. The leaves rustled with a gentle whisper, not the dry, brittle sound of decay, but the soft murmur of contented growth. Elara paused, her fingers tracing the cool bark of an ancient tree. A faint, almost imperceptible vibration pulsed beneath her touch, a song of roots seeking nourishment, of sap rising. She smiled, a genuine, unburdened smile that reached her eyes.
“It’s… it’s coming back,” Kael breathed, his voice filled with a wonder that had replaced his earlier apprehension. He pointed towards a patch of wildflowers, their petals previously a washed-out grey. Now, they unfurled in shades of violet and gold, their colours so vivid they seemed to glow from within. “I thought they were gone forever.”
