The air at the summit of the Whispering Peaks was thin and sharp, carrying a silence that was more than just the absence of sound. It was a heavy, pressing quiet, like a blanket woven from forgotten tears. Elara, her fingers still tingling from the last notes she’d coaxed from her Resonator, stepped forward, Kael close behind, his hand resting reassuringly on the hilt of his simple wooden sword. Elder Maeve’s words echoed in Elara’s mind: *“The heart of the dissonance lies not in malice, but in a song unsung, a sorrow unacknowledged.”*

Before them, the world seemed to hold its breath. The vibrant colours Elara had fought so hard to restore in the valleys below were muted here, washed out to shades of grey and pale violet. The wind, which had whispered secrets and carried melodies for miles, was now a mournful sigh, a breath drawn in but never exhaled. It wasn't a storm of wind or water, but a swirling, shimmering disturbance in the very air, a knot of shadow and muted light. It pulsed with a slow, heavy rhythm, like a wounded heart. This was it. The core of the Discord.

Elara raised her Resonator, its smooth, cool surface a familiar comfort against her palm. Each pad glowed faintly, a soft internal light that seemed to push back against the encroaching dimness. She could feel it, a deep thrumming beneath the suffocating silence, a desperate plea for resonance. It was a song, but a broken one, full of longing and pain.
