The air in the narrow mountain pass grew heavy, not with the usual crisp chill of the Whispering Peaks, but with a suffocating stillness. It was a silence that pressed in, not just on their ears, but on their very souls. Elara clutched her Resonator, its polished wood cool against her trembling fingers. Beside her, Kael’s hand rested on the hilt of his sturdy hunting knife, his jaw set. They had been warned, Elder Maeve had spoken of the Discord’s tendrils, of how it could take form, but seeing it was something else entirely.
It began as a ripple in the very air, a distortion that made the rough-hewn rocks shimmer and warp. Then, it coalesced. Not into a creature of flesh and bone, but into a swirling vortex of shadow and muted sound. It was a knot of discord, a living embodiment of all that was out of tune. A low, guttural hum emanated from it, a sound that scraped against Elara’s senses, making her teeth ache. Colors leached from the landscape around them, the vibrant moss on the rocks turning a dull, lifeless grey, the distant snow-capped peaks fading into a hazy, indistinct smudge.
“What is that?” Kael breathed, his voice tight with a fear he was trying to conceal.
