Chapter 7
Whispers in the Walls
The labyrinth's destabilization intensifies. Elara hears disorienting whispers and sees walls shift illogically, representing the chaotic forces, the Whispering Angles, at play.
The air within the labyrinth grew thick, heavy with an unseen pressure that Elara could feel pressing against her skin. It wasn't just the geometric precision of the cubes anymore; something was *wrong*. The walls, once solid and reassuring in their calculated angles, now seemed to shimmer, the lines of their construction blurring as if viewed through heat haze. A low hum vibrated through the floor, a disquieting tremor that made her teeth ache.
"It's… changing," she murmured, her voice barely a whisper against the growing cacophony. She ran a hand along the cool, smooth surface of a wall, but her fingers met an unexpected resistance, a subtle ripple that wasn't there before. It was like touching water that had suddenly decided to become solid, then liquid again. The perfect angles of the cube were no longer so perfect. A corner that should have been precisely ninety degrees now seemed to bulge outwards, a grotesque distortion of Euclidean geometry.
Then came the whispers. At first, they were faint, like the rustle of dry leaves or the distant sigh of wind through an unseen canyon. But they grew, coalescing into a maddening chorus of overlapping voices, none distinct, all speaking a language that twisted and turned upon itself. They weren't words, not really, but sounds that mimicked the sharp, percussive nature of mathematical proofs and the drawn-out, melancholic tones of unsolved equations.
