Chapter 5
The Tangent's Truth
A chamber requires Elara to use tangent functions to find the correct path. The walls shift and distort, testing her focus and mathematical reasoning. The labyrinth seems alive.
Elara found herself in a chamber that pulsed with an unsettling energy, a stark contrast to the predictable angles of the city she called home. The walls, once solid planes, now seemed to breathe, their surfaces rippling like water disturbed by a stone. Ahead, a chasm yawned, its depths lost in an ethereal mist. Across this void, a single, narrow bridge, formed from shimmering light, beckoned. But it was not a straight path. It twisted and turned, a serpentine line that defied simple measurement.
"It requires a tangent," a voice whispered, seemingly from nowhere and everywhere at once. It was the Guardian, its presence a prickle on Elara's skin. "The angle of approach, the angle of departure. The very essence of change, captured in a single ratio."
Elara’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the labyrinth’s own rhythmic hum. She unrolled her measuring parchment, her fingers tracing the faint lines of her calculations. The bridge, she realized, was not a fixed structure but a projection, its stability dependent on the precise angle she chose to step onto it. A miscalculation, a deviation of even a fraction of a degree, and the bridge would dissolve, sending her plummeting into the swirling abyss.
