Chapter 15
Echoes of Mr. Henderson
Even in success, echoes of past skepticism surface. Mateo encounters new gatekeepers, but his confidence, built on hard-won experience, allows him to face them.
The polished grandeur of the concert hall felt both familiar and utterly alien to Mateo. It was a world away from the cramped, damp room where he'd once practiced on a battered upright, its keys worn smooth by countless hours of desperate, hopeful fingers. Now, the air hummed with an expectant hush, the scent of expensive perfume mingling with the faint, sweet aroma of an orchestra tuning up. Yet, as he adjusted the cuffs of his impeccably tailored jacket, a faint tremor ran through him, an echo of a familiar unease.
“Nervous, Mateo?” Elena Petrova’s voice, a warm, comforting balm, cut through his introspection. She stood a few feet away, her silver hair neatly pinned, her eyes, as always, holding a knowing twinkle. She was his anchor, his confidante, the one person who understood the weight of this new existence as much as she celebrated its triumphs.
