The Comfort of Success
Financial worries recede. Mateo can finally afford comfort, security. Yet, the memory of cold nights and empty plates remains, a grounding force amidst the luxury.
The grand piano stood not as a distant, unattainable dream anymore, but as a tangible, gleaming presence in his spacious apartment. Its polished ebony surface reflected the soft glow of the city lights filtering through the tall windows, a stark contrast to the cracked plaster and flickering gas lamps of his youth. Mateo Vargas, no longer the boy who practiced on a borrowed, out-of-tune upright in a drafty room, ran a reverent hand over the cool ivory keys. The weight of success, a far more complex burden than he’d ever imagined, settled upon his shoulders, yet for the first time, it felt like a comfortable cloak, not a suffocating shroud.
The gnawing anxiety that had been his constant companion for so long, the relentless whisper of hunger and the cold dread of eviction, had finally receded. It was a strange, almost disorienting sensation. He could now buy groceries without calculating each coin, choose a warm coat without shivering at the price tag, and most importantly, he could breathe. The air in his new apartment, though scented with expensive wood polish and faint hints of jasmine from the balcony garden, felt cleaner, lighter, than any he had known before.
He remembered the days when a single missed performance, a single poorly paid gig, could mean the difference between eating and going hungry. He’d learned to stretch a loaf of bread for days, to find solace in the warmth of a borrowed blanket, to draw strength from the sheer, unyielding will to survive and play. These memories, etched deep within him, were not something he wished to forget. They were the foundation upon which his current life was built, the dark, rich soil from which his music had bloomed.
