Chapter 10
The Weight of Expectation
Fame arrives, swift and demanding. Critics rave, fans clamor. Mateo feels the pressure, the need to constantly prove himself, to live up to the burgeoning legend.
The applause had barely faded, a lingering hum in the opulent concert hall, when Mateo felt it – the almost physical weight of it. “Mateo, darling!” a voice chirped, cutting through the residual buzz. It was Sofia Rossi, her face alight with an almost childlike wonder, her hands already reaching for his. She was one of the first, one of the most ardent, her devotion a constant, comforting presence in the early days. Now, her enthusiasm felt amplified, a barometer of the public’s adoration. “That rendition of Chopin! Simply divine. I’ve never heard anything like it.”
