Miles apart, Lucas and Sofía begin their separate lives. Letters and calls bridge the distance, but the unspoken feelings and the ambiguity of their relationship continue to weigh on Sofía, fueling her longing and her art.
The salty air of the port city clung to Sofía like a second skin, a constant reminder of the vast expanse that now separated her from Lucas. Days bled into weeks, then months, each sunrise painting the sky with hues of hope and longing that Lucas, somewhere across the shimmering sea, would surely see too. Her room, once a sanctuary of shared laughter and whispered secrets with Sol, now felt cavernous, echoing with the phantom presence of his voice. The canvases that had once burst with vibrant colors now held muted tones, swirling with blues and greys that mirrored the ache in her chest. She painted the ocean, not the playful, sun-dappled waves of their childhood holidays, but the churning, tempestuous depths that hid unknown worlds and, she hoped, held him safe.
Sol, ever the steadfast anchor in Sofía’s tempestuous emotional sea, visited often, her presence a gentle balm. They’d sit for hours, Sol reading aloud from worn novels or recounting the mundane yet comforting details of her day, while Sofía sketched in her notebook, the graphite lines a frantic attempt to capture the fleeting images of Lucas’s smile, the curve of his jaw, the way his eyes crinkled at the corners when he laughed.
“He wrote again yesterday,” Sol said one afternoon, her voice soft as she placed a letter on Sofía’s desk. The familiar, neat script was a jolt, a tangible piece of him that sent a tremor through Sofía’s hands.
