The air in the old library, usually a comforting balm of aged paper and quiet contemplation, felt thick with an unspoken tension. Sofía traced the faded gold lettering on the spine of a forgotten tome, her fingers leaving faint trails on the dust. Sol sat opposite her, her brow furrowed, a familiar worry etched around her kind eyes. They had spoken for hours, the conversation weaving through memories and anxieties, but it always circled back to the same precipice: Lucas.
“I just don’t understand,” Sofía whispered, her voice barely disturbing the hushed reverence of the room. “Why would they… why would they keep it from me?” Her gaze drifted to a framed photograph on a nearby shelf – a younger Lucas, his arm slung casually around a beaming, much smaller Sofía, both of them caught in a sun-drenched moment of shared laughter. It was a picture that had always hung on the wall, a testament to their closeness, a symbol of familial love. Or so she had believed.
Sol reached across the polished oak table, her hand covering Sofía’s. “Sometimes, Sofía,” she said gently, her voice a low murmur, “people do things they think are for the best, even when they’re wrong.”
