The sun beat down with an unforgiving intensity, a relentless hammer against Khepri’s brow. Each grain of sand seemed to absorb the light and radiate it back, a shimmering haze that distorted the horizon and played cruel tricks on his weary eyes. Days had bled into one another, marked only by the slow crawl of the sun across the vast, indifferent sky and the gnawing ache in his belly. His once crisp linen robes were now tattered and stained, a testament to the unforgiving embrace of the desert. The proud spirit that had propelled him from the gilded halls of his palace felt like a distant memory, a flickering ember struggling against a gale. Doubt, that insidious serpent, coiled in the pit of his stomach, whispering insidious questions: Had he been a fool? Had he led his loyal guards on a fool’s errand, chasing a phantom of hope while his kingdom withered?

He stumbled, his foot catching on an unseen rock, and pitched forward. The impact sent a jolt of pain through his knee, and for a moment, he lay there, the hot sand pressing against his cheek, the vast silence of the desert deafening. He closed his eyes, picturing the parched fields back home, the hollow eyes of his people. The weight of their despair settled upon him, heavier than any crown. He had promised them hope, and all he had found was emptiness.

It was large, its shell a mosaic of earthy browns and greens, weathered and ancient, like a piece of the desert floor brought to life. Slowly, deliberately, the creature moved, its wrinkled head emerging from the protective shell. It was a tortoise, of a size Khepri had only ever read about in the dusty scrolls of the royal library. Its eyes, dark and deep-set, seemed to hold the wisdom of centuries, reflecting the boundless sky above.
