Chapter 10
A Pharaoh's Plea
The griffin challenges Khepri, expecting a fight. But Khepri, remembering the tortoise's lessons, lays down his sword. He speaks not of conquest, but of his people's plight and his earnest desire to heal them.
The air around the oasis shimmered, not with heat, but with an almost tangible magic. Khepri stood before the griffin, his heart a drum against his ribs. It was magnificent, a creature of legend made real, its feathers the color of a sunset storm, its eyes like molten gold. He had expected a beast, a monster to be overcome, but this was something far more ancient, far more profound. The griffin regarded him, its gaze piercing, and Khepri felt as though his very soul was being laid bare.
"You come seeking what is mine, little pharaoh," the griffin’s voice rumbled, deep and resonant, like stones shifting in the earth. It was not a question, but a statement of fact, heavy with the weight of ages. "Do you come with sword drawn, ready to spill blood for a drop of water?"
Khepri’s hand, which had instinctively tightened on the hilt of his ceremonial dagger, loosened. He remembered the tortoise’s gentle words, the slow, steady wisdom that had guided him through the endless dunes. Strength is not always in the striking, Khepri. It is in the understanding. He had come all this way, endured the biting sands and the mocking mirages, not for glory, but for healing. To fight this creature, this guardian of life, would be to betray the very purpose of his quest.
