The words hung in the air, heavy and impossible. *Sun and Moon.* *Yin and Yang.* *Balance.* Elder Lyra’s pronouncements, delivered with the quiet certainty of ages, had landed like stones in the still waters of our rivalry. Onyx Vale, embodiment of the moon, and Xime Gabe, manifestation of the sun. It was a cosmic joke, a cruel twist of fate that had pitted us against each other for as long as we could remember, only to reveal we were two halves of a single, essential whole.
I stared at Onyx, his normally sharp features softened by a bewilderment that mirrored my own. His eyes, those deep pools that usually held a storm of resentment when they landed on me, were wide and unfocused, searching for purchase in this new, dizzying reality. The air between us, usually crackling with animosity, felt… different. Thinner. Like the fragile membrane between night and day.
“This… this is madness,” Onyx finally breathed, his voice a low rasp that seemed to echo the secrets of the night. He ran a hand through his dark hair, a nervous gesture I’d only ever seen when he was cornered or truly furious. Now, it looked like pure, unadulterated shock.
